Meet our Project

UNDER FINANCIAL AID FOR DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH & INNOVATION RESEARCH PLANS IN THE RIS3 PRIORITY AREA OF "ENERGY APPLICATIONS"

About the Project

SOcRaTES project consist an effort for the development of small scale and medium temperature energy system. This system aims to take advantage of the solar energy in order to cover the thermal needs of a small industry. Renewable energy filed is under research the last decades and this project hopes to integrate environmentally friendly design and manufacturing solutions.

Modular Parabolic reflector design

The study of the project requirements leads to the design of a medium temperature Concentrating Trough Collector capable to supply hot water & steam of an Industry which is located in Patras. The parabolic reflector is designed and manufactured inhouse from materials with high reflectivity which can also withstand loads from extreme weather conditions.

Design concept to facilitate the assembly and the maintenance procedures

Not only the modular reflector design facilitates the final assembly of the Parabolic Trough Collector but also the maintenance procedures and the overall serviceability. To make it that possible, the support of the collector consists of several pieces like a “web” to ensure the stability of the structure. All the modules of the collector can be assembled at the same place following few, easy steps, reducing at the same time the transportation cost.

Real Time Monitoring

The integration of sensors for real time monitoring ensures the high operational status of the structure during the lifecycle.

The Consortium

The SOcRaTES Consortium consists of 2 partners with significant experience each in their respective fields of interest. Vathron IKE, the project end user, holds a leading position in the steel manufacturing industry. In this research project will be the industrial partner of the partnership, acting as the end user, hosting the pilot implementation of the project.

Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation, University of Patras

The Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation (LMS) is oriented on research and development in cutting edge scientific and technological fields. LMS is involved in a number of research projects funded by the CEU and European industrial partners. Particular emphasis is given to the co-operation with the European industry as well as with a number of "hi-tech" firms. LMS is under the direction and technical coordination of Professor George Chryssolouris. It is organized in three different groups:

  1. Manufacturing Processes Modelling and Energy Efficiency
  2. Robots, Automation and Virtual Reality in Manufacturing
  3. Manufacturing Systems

Vathron IKE

Vathron IKE is a construction company which is located at the Industrial Area near by Patras. Main activities:

  1. Metal buildings construction and generally steel structures
  2. Steel products seller as well as construction related materials
  3. Modifications of steel & aluminum part

Steel structure certifications according to European Standards & ISO Standards (ISO 9001:2015, EN 1090, EN3834).
